    Background

Operating room time is the most expensive resource a hospital has - costing most hospitals more than $20 per minute.

When perioperative processes (including pre-, intra- and post-operative processes) are broken or slow, it affects all stakeholders adversely.

    • Patient cases are delayed or canceled
    • Surgeons sit idly by waiting to operate
    • OR Coordinators cannot find what they need to get a case ready
    • Central Sterile gets backed up and instruments get diverted for flashing

MS&A's Operating Room Efficiency team has seen all this and more - and it designs and implements comprehensive operating room solutions that improve everything from physician productivity and satisfaction to reduced expenses per procedure.

    Operating Room Efficiency Program

MS&A applies a rigorous, data-driven approach to identifying opportunities for operating room improvement.

    Activities include:

    • Data gathering
    • Evaluation
    • Redesign of perioperative operations to include OR customers, including: patients, surgeons, staff and the hospital.
The MS&A Operating Room Efficiency Program

The Operating Room Efficiency consulting engagement follows a standard methodology and approach to include all key personnel and physicians within your perioperative operations. The primary components of the engagement are:

    Data Analysis

    • MS&A performs an analysis of the client's current perioperative processes before the first on-site visit.

    On-Site Interviews and Observations

    • Once the initial data analysis is complete, the MS&A team visits the client site for in-depth interviews and observations across the entire perioperative services spectrum.

    Recommendations

    • At the conclusion of the assessment, MS&A provides the client a report with the improvement recommendations.

    Implementation

    • Once the recommendations are discussed and a plan forward is agreed, MS&A works with the client to develop a detailed implementation plan to achieve the desired results.

While implementing the plan, MS&A ensures there is complete knowledge transfer by collaborating closely with the client's project team. The length of the implementation engagement depends entirely upon the scope and complexity of the changes being addressed.

    The Benefits

The results from implementing an Operating Room Efficiency Program are proven and immediate and have been sustained for years:

    • Increased physician productivity
    • Improved staff satisfaction
    • Improved physician satisfaction
    • More efficient case scheduling
    • Reduced expenses per procedure
    • Higher contribution margins per case

An Operating Room Efficiency Program positions participating hospitals and surgeons
to be leaders in innovation and value creation.

    Ongoing Support

    Subscription Services:
To continuously improve program performance, MS&A provides subscription support services for hospitals that have completed the program implementation. Hospitals that we believe have successfully implemented a Destination Center of Superior Performance are eligible to purchase the subscription service on an annual basis.
